The Woman Who Inspired the Universe
Before she became a symbol of resistance, Mekatilili wa Menza was a Giriama woman rooted in the communities, traditions and changing world of Kenya's coast.
In the early twentieth century, British colonial rule was reaching more deeply into Giriama life—challenging established authority, reshaping relationships with land and labour, and placing growing pressure on a society determined to preserve its autonomy.
Mekatilili emerged as one of the most formidable voices of that resistance, mobilising her community at a time when confronting colonial power carried enormous consequences.
Yet the woman behind the name is harder to recover.
The surviving record is fragmented.
Much of what was written about Mekatilili during her lifetime passed through colonial officials, while other memories of her leadership survived through Giriama oral tradition and were recorded by later historians.
Together, these sources reveal an extraordinary figure—but they also leave silences around the person she was before history remembered her as a resistance leader.
Those silences are where the Mekatilili Universe begins, but not where history ends.
The novels, poetry and characters within this Universe are works of historical imagination.
They draw upon documented events, scholarship, cultural memory and the world Mekatilili inhabited while imagining the relationships, conversations and inner experiences the archive cannot preserve.
They do not replace the historical Mekatilili. They begin with her.
To understand the stories, first meet the woman whose courage inspired them.
