My Journey as a Freelance Content Writer in Mombasa, Kenya

I’m Brian. My path into content and SEO wasn’t linear. In 2006, at 19, while a freshman at Covenant University in Ota, Nigeria, I was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia — a moment that shattered my dream of becoming a software engineer. The years that followed weren’t pretty: denial, harsh medication, voices only I could hear, and a steady stream of peers racing ahead while I tried to keep my footing at my mother’s home in Mombasa.

Finding a lifeline (2011)

I answered a Kenyan online ad for an SEO content writer. Veritable Writers onboarded me after tests. The pay wasn’t glamorous, but the door was open — and I ran through it.

Leveling up

Stints with local agencies (notably E‑Writers) sharpened my craft. My first international client — Birk Digital Group (Raleigh, NC) — brought me into senior‑level copywriting. Later, iWorker opened B2B and SaaS doors: Cutco/Vector, CaliberMind, Sonicu, Meliora, and Botanical Chemist in Australia.

Strategy & results

With Botanical Chemist, I expanded into digital strategy. We ran a lean LinkedIn thought‑leadership + blogging program that landed multiple posts in the top 3 of Google SERPs and even in AI Overviews — all without a dedicated SEO budget.

When the wheels came off (2024)

Ten straight months without a day off ended in a nervous breakdown and a severe paranoia episode. I was hospitalized for two weeks. Clients moved on. Meanwhile, I had just become a father (May 2, 2024) to a beautiful girl — Haidee.

Rebuild & purpose

I turned inward: rebuilding my portfolio, publishing on LinkedIn, Medium, Contently, INSPO — and finally prioritizing this site. The work now centers on clarity, quality, and sustainability — for my clients, and for my health.

Note: I’m sharing this candidly because neurodiversity and mental health belong in the open. If you’re navigating similar waters, you’re not alone.

The Mekatilili Series | Kenyan Historical Fiction Writing

I’ve long loved historical fiction — from Dumas and Dickens to Achebe and Ngũgĩ. As a Chonyi kinsman and admirer of powerful feminist narratives, I’m drawn to Mekatilili wa Menza: a Mijikenda matriarch who inspired Giriama resistance through the sacred kifudu dance, oath‑taking, and fearless defiance.

Trilogy overview

  • Book One — Echoes of Valor: childhood, young womanhood, the first spark of resistance. First draft complete; deep editing underway.
  • Book Two — Daughter of War: the movement, sacrifices, and leadership. Planned to begin early 2026.
  • Book Three — Curtain Falls: elder years, legacy — interwoven with the fictional descendant Mnyazi wa Menza, whose arc runs parallel from Book One.

Work With a Kenyan Content Writer & Digital Marketing Specialist

FAQs — Working with Brian Njenga

1). What kind of work do you do, exactly?
I help brands with strategy-first SEO copywriting, content strategy, editorial planning, GA4 + Looker Studio reporting, and lightweight web builds that are search- and conversion-friendly.
2). Which industries do you write for?
B2B SaaS, sustainability/ESG, health & life sciences, ecommerce, and education. I’m comfortable translating technical topics into clear, human narratives.
3). What’s your typical engagement model?
Two options: project-based (scoped deliverables, milestones) or monthly retainers (ongoing content + analytics). We’ll choose what fits your goals and cadence.
4). How do you price projects?
Fixed-scope pricing for projects; monthly fees for retainers. Each quote includes discovery, writing, revisions, QA, and basic performance tracking setup where relevant.
5). What does your process look like?
Strategy → brief → draft → review → refine → measure. I prefer clear briefs, subject-matter access, and agreed review windows to keep quality high and timelines predictable.
6). Do you offer analytics and dashboards?
Yes—GA4 setup/cleanup, events, and Looker Studio dashboards that track what matters (traffic quality, conversions, and content performance).
7). How many revisions are included?
Most deliverables include two revision rounds. Complex pieces (white papers, landing pages) may include a scoped third pass for polish or compliance.
8). What tools do you work in?
Google Docs, Notion, Figma (light wireframes), GA4, Looker Studio, and standard SEO toolsets. I adapt to your stack when needed.
9). How do you manage timelines and availability?
I work at a sustainable pace to protect quality and health. We scope realistic timelines up front and keep a steady check-in cadence. If anything shifts, I flag it early with options.
10). How do we get started?
Send a note via the Contact form with goals, audience, examples, and timelines. I’ll respond with next steps and a lightweight discovery call to scope your project.
